Namecheap: URL redirects with HTTPS support

Namecheap provides basic domain forwarding, but it lacks key features like HTTPS and analytics.

When you set up a redirect with Namecheap, you’re on your own for managing SSL certificates. Without proper SSL, you’ll run into errors when accessing your site via HTTPS.

So, how do you secure your website with HTTPS using Namecheap?

Simple, with RedirHub. We handle SSL certificates for your site, ensuring they’re always up to date. Plus, redirecting your apex domain to the www version is a breeze.

Here’s how to set it up:

Step 1: Create a RedirHub account

Start by creating an account: RedirHub Registration.

Step 2: Add your domain to RedirHub

Add the domain you want to redirect. For this example, we’ll use ‘redirhub-example-nc.xyz’ registered with Namecheap. Enter this domain in the ‘Redirect from’ field. It’s best to include both the www and apex (non-www) versions.

Step 3: Navigate to Namecheap

To set up redirecting through RedirHub, you need to make a one-time DNS change at Namecheap.

Log in to Namecheap and go to your Dashboard.

Click ‘Manage’ for the domain you want to redirect.

Click on ‘Advanced DNS’.

    Step 4: Changing the DNS

Now, let’s update the DNS settings.

Optional: Remove existing URL Redirect Records

If you’ve set up URL Redirect Records before, remove them first.

    1. Click ‘Add new record’.
    2. Select ‘CNAME Record’ and enter ‘@’ as Host with ‘edge.redirhub.com’ as the Value.

Note: Unlike other providers, Namecheap allows a CNAME on the ‘@’ record, which flattens it automatically.

Click ‘Add new record’ again, select ‘CNAME Record’, and enter ‘www’ as Host with ‘edge.redirhub.com’ as the Value. Your screen should look like this:

When you’re done, click ‘Save all changes’.

Step 5: DNS verification in RedirHub

The DNS changes are made! Propagation might take a few hours, depending on the TTL settings.

RedirHub will automatically check the DNS records. Once verified, an SSL certificate will be requested and installed.

Closing: RedirHub is now set up with automatic HTTPS!

All done! You’ve successfully set up RedirHub with Namecheap. Your domain now enjoys full HTTPS support and is redirecting through RedirHub. All your URLs will automatically redirect to the HTTPS version of your site. And you don’t need to worry about SSL certificates—they’ll be renewed automatically, keeping your site secure.

Optional: Redirect all pages to the apex or www version of your website

Once you’ve set up RedirHub, think about how to get the most out of our service. You can redirect your apex domain (naked or root domain) to the www version, or the other way around. Check our support page for more details.
